Advent 1 Sunday / White Gift Sunday

St. Paul's United Church will celebrate Communion and White Gift Sunday at its November 30th regular Sunday Service at 10:30 a.m., led by Rev. Neil Young.

Please bring items wrapped in white paper or in white bags to be donated to the Salvation Army for their food bank and Christmas store. The tradition of White Gift Sunday began in a small Methodist church in Ohio in 1904.

The minister’s wife wanted to address the problem of the inequity of gifts given at the Sunday School Christmas party. Instead of focusing on receiving gifts, the people of the congregation were asked to bring gifts to Jesus that then would be shared with people in the community. With all the of the gifts wrapped in plain white paper, no one would know which was an expensive gift and which was a more modest one. Everyone would be able to share in the joy of giving to others.
