🕰️🚎 Explore the Legacy of Central State Hospital
Founded in 1842, Central State Hospital stands as one of Milledgeville’s most iconic — and complex — landmarks. Once the largest mental health facility in the United States, the hospital reached its peak in the 1960s with over 12,000 patients, 6,000 employees, and more than 8,000 acres of land. Today, the campus continues to operate with over 200 clients and a footprint of roughly 2,000 acres.
Led by a former hospital employee, this two-hour guided trolley tour offers a candid and thoughtful exploration of the institution’s layered history — from its early foundations to modern-day operations and redevelopment efforts. Tour highlights include Cedar Lane Cemetery and the Chapel of All Faiths, when accessible.
