Activity Level 2: Moderate
Location: Bear Run Nature Reserve, Mill Run PA
Guides: Abby-lead, Lindsay-assist
Join us for a 5-mile loop hike through Bear Run Nature Reserve, a protected area of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy dedicated to preserving rivers, streams, forests, and wildlife. Just a half-mile from Frank Lloyd Wright’s world-famous Fallingwater — designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 — Bear Run offers some of the most scenic and diverse landscapes in the Laurel Highlands.
We’ll follow the red trail, beginning in a peaceful grove of pines before weaving through a maze of rhododendron and stretches of low-growing ferns. The path takes us across small creeks—some by footbridge, others on stepping stones—before leading into thick woods filled with moss-covered boulders. Along the way, we’ll wander through dense mountain laurel, follow rocky stream beds, and enjoy the rugged beauty that makes this reserve so special.
This hike packs an incredible variety of scenery into just five miles, just perfect for those looking to explore one of Western Pennsylvania’s most treasured landscapes!
Total hiking distance: 5.2 miles
Total elevation: 600 feet
