The Miami Chapter - Black Nurses Association, Inc. (Miami BNA) is proud to host its 44th Annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Hotel Biscayne Bay, 1717 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, FL 33132, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. This year’s theme, "Building Resilient Communities: The Role of Nursing in Promoting Health Equity, Research, and Advocacy," reflects the evolving role of nursing in advancing health equity and community well-being. We are honored to welcome Dr. Carol Biggs, DHSc, MBA-HA, RN, Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Executive at Jackson Health System, as our keynote speaker. Dr. Biggs will highlight the legacy of Black nurses and their invaluable contributions to the nursing profession, drawing from her personal experiences and expertise. This event will inspire both current and future generations of nurses to advocate for equitable healthcare access and deliver culturally competent care to diverse patient populations.
Miami BNA has had a significant impact on South Florida's communities, as well as positive collaborations with other organizations for 54 years. For (43) forty-three years, we have been able to provide scholarships and awards to deserving individuals who have chosen to passionately follow the nursing profession. As in past years, MBNA will present a platform to applaud those who have contributed outstanding service, as well as those who have given their time and talents to support community engagement projects of the Miami BNA , both locally and nationally.
In the past six years, Miami BNA has awarded over $45,500 in scholarships to students pursuing careers in nursing and nurses advancing in the profession. We know that we cannot do this alone; but with your help, we can make it happen. Your sponsorship proceeds will support our Nurses and Student Nurses Scholarship Fund. Miami BNA is committed to its mission to decrease health dispaites through Advocacy, Education, and Health Promotion.

Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Executive, Jackson Health System
Carol Biggs, MBA-HA, DHSc, RN, is the senior vice president and chief nursing executive of Jackson Health System, responsible for the strategic and financial development of the nursing organization for one of the nation’s largest public healthcare systems.
Dr. Biggs is responsible for providing leadership to plan, direct, execute, and evaluate strategic and operational priorities to ensure quality nursing practice, continuous improvement, consistent standards, and policies that are in accordance with the health system’s vision and mission, as well as all applicable laws, regulatory/accreditation requirements. By working closely with the medical staff, Dr. Biggs ensures that best practices in patient care delivery are integrated throughout the organization.
Prior to joining Jackson in 2017, Dr. Biggs worked in several well-known medical facilities, including Baptist Health System, where she was the vice president and chief nursing officer at South Miami Hospital.
A native of Jamaica, Dr. Biggs earned her nursing degree at Rutgers University in New Jersey and her MBA-HA from the University of Miami. She received her Doctor of Health Sciences (DHSc) degree from Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Biggs also serves as the Associate Dean of Academic Health Centers Integration for The University of Miami SONHS. She is also as an adjunct faculty member at adjunct at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies and at the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences at Florida International University. She is a consultant and lecturer for various organizations involving physician and community education, a member of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and American College of Health Care Executives.
With a distinguished career as a nurse leader, Dr. Biggs has published various articles and has numerous accomplishments. Among them: She served as the keynote speaker for the Fourth Annual National Nurse Empowerment Conference, and was selected by Legacy Magazine in 2019 as one of South Florida's 25 Most Influential & Prominent Black Women in Business and Industry and one of South Florida's top Black Healthcare Professionals.
