Nyambene Hills Hike N Camp in Meru County offers an epic calming trail through Nyambene Forest. The trail starts at the Administration Police Leadership Center at the edge of the forest. From the Center the overlapping hills of rainforest are so inviting below on your left is Maua
Mwariama Depression
There is a myth that Musa Mwariama (Kenya Revolutionary) was emerging from the forest after his massive strength created the depression that runs down the valley to Maua.
Terrain:
The trail is curated to allow for the hiker to have more intimate connection with the forest. The trail is about 13km meandering through the ridges. In addition it has an untouched feel- Nyambene Hills Hike N Camp Trail is gentle with ideal spots to just sit and admire the beauty at the shores of Ura Dam and at The base of Nyambene Falls. After start up a steep hike up of about 150m to the highest point where some telecom mast have been installed. This is the only challenging section of the trail. Despite this the trail is ideal for beginners or as family outing.
Highest Elevation 2453m Asl.
Sacred site
About 3 km into the hike we get to this sizeable natural cleared portion of the forest a few meters from the road said to be a sacred shrine. The portion is covered with evergreen grasses surrounded by forest bushes within the fringes. The middle part of that portion has a small pool of water, which collects there during rainy seasons.
The place is locally known as Kieni-kia-Ntubwarimu literally meaning the field of Ntubwarimu. Now this is where sacrifices and rituals could be performed. This happens during times of calamities like prolonged droughts, famines, epidemics and floods among others.
