About the event

41st Walter Deptula Public Speaking & Essay Contest
The Water Deptula Public Speaking & Essay Contest was started in 1984 to recognize outstanding writing and public speaking by 8th-grade students.

Join us on Monday, May 5 as six finalists from each middle school (Edison, Lincoln, and Washington) present their written essays orally before a panel of judges and a live audience. A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner will be selected from each school in both the essay and public speaking categories.

The event is free and open to the public. Come cheer on Meriden 8th graders as they compete in the 41st citywide Deptula Contest!
