Make Your Own Mosaic Workshop at Trimontium

Join local mosaic artist Joy Parker for a hands-on workshop creating your very own snail mosaic, inspired by the ancient art of Roman mosaic-making. As part of our summer holiday events programme, this creative session blends nature, history, and art.

Snails often featured in Roman food mosaics, symbolising their role in the luxurious feasts of the elite. Now you can bring this quirky piece of Roman culture to life using ceramic and vitreous glass tiles—modern materials guided by traditional Roman techniques.

You'll learn how to plan your design, lay your tiles using the Roman "rules of flow," and see a live demonstration of grouting. Each participant will receive a small bag of grout to complete their piece at home. Please note: these mosaics are for indoor display only.

This workshop is suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and there's a “Make it Together” option for kids and grown-ups to collaborate on one mosaic as a team.
