ABOUT THE JOURNEY:
Step back in time onboard The Grainlander to enjoy a weekend of slow rail travel to some of the Victorian Mallee country's most beautiful townships and famous attractions.
Entering Melbourne's busy Southern Cross Station you will immediately notice our heritage train and our moving museum of carriages juxtaposing the modernity and hustle surrounding. From the moment you board you'll immediately relax and enter the elegance of a bygone era.
After an included pre-departure dinner, you'll join The Grainlander just after 10:00 pm as we wake up the station with the whistle being sounded announcing our departure. Join your fellow travellers and tour organisers in one of our luxury Club Carriages to enjoy drinks and an evening supper as we head south to Geelong then along the freight only line to Ballarat where we will stop briefly allowing you some fresh air and a chance to stretch your legs. We depart into the night passing Maryborough and crossing the Redwood forests of the Victorian Goldfields.
Awake to a Mallee sunrise and a warm catered breakfast as our train continues on to Wycheproof where you'll have a chance to alight from the train and enjoy a fresh-air stop, along with time to walk to the main street and back. Soon after Wycheproof, you'll disembark at Sea Lake, the end of the line and the railhead for Lake Tyrrell - Victoria's inland sea.
From here, you'll join a coach to journey along the now famous Silo Art Trail. Your Silo Art Trail journey today will travel to three or four works of art (as time permits) including Lascelles, Rosebury, Brim or Sheep Hills.
After a glass of bubbly beneath our last Silo Art Instillation, the coaches return us to Sea Lake for a quintessential country pub dinner, then onward to Lake Tyrrell where you'll watch the sunset. Enjoy a night of restful sleep on-board the train as we remain stationary in the township of Sea Lake.
On Sunday, you'll wake to another Mallee sunrise and the final silo art viewing of our tour, at Nullawil. The Grainlander will stop in the small hamlet of Nullawil. Looming over the siding in Nullawil is artist Sam Bates, aka Smug's work depicting kelpie sheep dog Jimmy, who often makes a cameo appearance.
Settle into the rhythm of Slow Rail Travel as we then return towards Melbourne, pausing to break the journey at the elegant historic station of Maryborough for lunch before continuing to Ballarat.
After departing Ballarat, you'll enjoy afternoon tea in the bar and club carriages, as the train returns over the dividing range and through Bacchus Marsh offering a spectacular view of Melbourne's lights. It's then a quick run into Melbourne, Southern Cross, where our train will arrive and terminate at 5.15 pm.
