Following a sold-out season at La Mama in 2019, ‘Ron & Isobel’ by acclaimed playwright Anna Lall returns by popular demand.
It’s 1970’s Melbourne. Deep in the suburbs, a sea of synthetic orange and the debris of a never-finished kitchen renovation fill the home of Ron and Isobel Cheney, whose warm and stormy relationship has just two speeds: laughing and yelling. We find them on Saturday 15 November 1975, just four days after Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was sacked by the Governor General. Along with the rest of the nation, staunch Labor supporter Ron is reeling from shock. Isobel is fuming over his misguided attempt at an anniversary surprise, and their adult son Jay is about to make an unexpected announcement sure to rattle the rafters. When the new neighbours - ‘young liberals’ Paul and Sandra - drop in for impromptu drinks, the stage is set for a night to remember.
Based on real life events, this boisterous, heartfelt comedy by award-winning playwright Anna Lall takes place over the course of a single evening - think Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf meets Don’s Party hot-housed in a 1970’s reno nightmare. Strap yourself in for a wild ride!
