We continue our interrogation of contemporary Italian cinema with a discussion of this visually and emotionally striking 2022 mountain film based on the novel by Paolo Cognetti. Turin based Bruno encounters Pietro on a holiday in the Alps. This idyllic, childhood experience is then played out as the two boys grow to maturity and continue their increasingly complex relationship on the side of several spectacular mountains and deep within their valleys. Beyond the metaphorical, this film shows us how the established genre of the landscape film places a notable environment as an equally expressive element in the representation of extraordinary human encounters. In this workshop we will advance our discussions on the potential of great filmmaking to augment our experiences of cherished literary texts. The Eight Mountains provides an ideal opportunity to evaluate what film adaptation can add to this kind of storytelling on its own artistic terms.
Clips will be shown as a basis for group discussion.
ITALIAN CINEMA FORUM
Following the successful classic and contemporary Italian cinema workshops chaired by Mark Nicholls at CO.AS.IT. (2019-2024), we continue the discussion with new instalments for 2025. Join us for this year’s forum. Our aim – as always – is to stimulate you to watch these films and television programs, again or for the first time, and to bring your ideas and insights to our usual lively discussion.
Dr Mark Nicholls is Senior Lecturer in Cinema Studies at the University of Melbourne, where he has taught film since 1993. Mark has worked as a film journalist for ABC Radio and The Age, and has a list of over twenty stage credits as a playwright, performer, producer, and director.
