Amy's earliest experiments with music began with what she could work with, which was a tape recorder and her voice. Later, whether it was on a 2-octave toy piano, plastic guitar, recorder, or potato ocarina, if it sounded notes she would play it by ear, even unwittingly learning the harmonica up-side-down.
Amy's first formal music education began in the 4th grade with the violin. A few years later she dropped orchestra and picked up the trumpet to play for the next 12 years. She played in school band, 4-H Band, District Symphonic Band, Stage Band and Jazz Band performances.
Although debilitating stage fright kept her from soloing, the musician in her pressed on by joining a singing group that toured for a few weeks during the summers throughout the state, where soloing could easily be carried by others with apparent nerves of steel.
In her early college years, she participated in stage band performing alongside students from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Those private lessons really paid off with a bona fide check for playing. Continuing her studies towards a degree, she transferred to North Texas State University; now known as the University of North Texas (UNT).
Several years later she bought a guitar, taught herself enough to play for the Worship Team every Sunday in church, and eventually also sang backup. Her natural ability to find unique harmonies and contra-melodies were intuitive and appreciated, but her passion to express her own sound continued to drive her to create her own music.
Opportunities to join local Irish open session groups introduced her to experience Dorian and Mixolydian modes, and Amy discovered her innate love for the 6/8 jigs with a Gaelic lilt.
After many years of reluctance, Amy's unique perspective still gives her original tunes an "Amyable" sound that she now wants to share.
