John Kerns
is a songwriter with lots of toys. Utilizing several
guitars, foot-percussion stomp-boxes, multiple
looping pedals and multiple microphones, Kerns
lays down original and cover songs with unique
textures. Vocals harmonies, guitar solos, and
many, many songs fill his performances from bars
to churches for all ages.
A life-long musician, music has been part of his
family since his grandfather led a dance band in the
1930’s-1950’s, his father became a high school
band director, and his mother I still a voice and piano instructor.
Kerns began teaching private guitar and bass lessons in 1997 after graduating from
Gustavus Adolphus College with a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in Music Performance.
Kerns has also created music for corporate clients such as DuraTech Industries,
Lutheran Youth Encounter, Faith Incubators, Fruits of the City, Solomon’s Porch and
others.
He is a powerful vocalist, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer. These
showcase John as a jack-of-all-trades in the music industry of The Twin Cities Leading
and playing in worship bands as Minister of Music at Spirit Garage [church] taught kerns
how to lead musicians of all experience levels. 25 years with this community allowed
him to express himself musically and spiritually while collaborating in songwriting,
worship leading and production of 3 original music CD’s.
Performing in many churches like Solomon’s Porch [Minneapolis], Peace United
Methodist [Shoreview], St. Andrew’s Lutheran [White Bear Lake], First Congregational
UCC [Grand Marais], Family of Christ Lutheran [Ham Lake] and others have helped
Kerns stay grounded in his faith while leading music and singing for others.
Outside of the church world, Kerns has worked with many other bands and musicians,
including Jonathan Rundman, Jambalaya, Natalie Lovejoy, The Bazillions and Scott
Laurent to name a few. His personal projects include rock band, Kerns and the
Hemispheres, which allowed him to record his first full original CD “Electron Drive” and
an original children’s album, “Cradlesongs”.
His current side-projects include The Tree House Scholars, a covid-lockdown-inspired
distance-recording group, Sir Psycho, a Red Hot Chili Peppers Tribute group, and “ARK”
[Acoustic Rock for Kids] for the many children’s shows Kerns performs.
