Mawbray and wider Solway Coast area is a fascinating mix of marine and terrestrial (land) habitat that has seen heavy human involvement over the past century. It’s a great place to see how humans are part of nature and how different species have adapted to major changes in their environment over the years.
In our mystery beach walk we will look for items on the beach that are familiar and unfamiliar to us and use story-telling to explore what we find. Led by zoologist Jess Mitchell this session will allow you to use your imagination as well as learn about the wildlife and wider environment of the Solway Coast. We will also discuss how the Solway coast provides an important habitat for many marine species, include some small sharks, and what we can do to protect it.
The Cumberland Coastal School staff have a wide range of experience concerning the plant, bird, and marine life on the Solway Coast as well as the area’s geology and human usage. We hope to share some of this and learn from your knowledge as we explore the area through story telling.
There will be periods of independent exploration and group-based listening and chatting within the session. We understand that some people are better at one or the other and there is no pressure to join in if you would rather stay quiet or explore your treasures alone.
This activity is suitable for all ages but will involve walking across the uneven terrain of the beach.
