An Interactive Character Analysis Workshop
Titled: Generational Questions in A Raisin in the Sun
This workshop is designed to give a fresh " insight' into the discussion of characters within the context of African American literature. Younger family members are analyzed for their individual dreams and how they struggle with poverty, racial discrimination, gender roles, racial identity and their limitations of the American Dream.
Participants will discuss:
Race and Family Dynamics in the 1950s vs Today.
The social, economic, and political events of the 50's that shaped the characters' lives.
Can young audience members relate to these characters?
What is the primary objective for each character?
Characters' search of The American Dream... Reality or Myth?
How the Southern identity and heritage, as mentioned in the play, influence characters' aspirations and conflicts.
What is the new social struggle for characters at the end of the play?
"It is my hope that the appraisal of A Raisin in the Sun by Matthew Playhouse will draw a new generation of audience members, while maintaining the original focus on racial and family dynamics." - Dr. Corlis Hayes, Director of A Raisin in the Sun.
