About the event

Fire Safety and Extinguisher Training
Dear Stark County Heritage Professionals,

I am pleased to announce our second Stark Heritage Emergency Response Team program. On Thursday, Oct. 2, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the Massillon Museum will be hosting a Fire Safety and Extinguisher training conducted by Mike Canfora, Fire Inspector/Investigator at the Massillon Fire Department. Starting at 8:30 AM, the Massillon Museum, located at 121 Lincoln Way E, Massillon, OH 44646, will be serving coffee and pastries. This training program is free to all Stark County heritage professionals.

The fire safety training portion of the program will cover the different classes of fires and the types of extinguishers designed for each, as well as how to inspect and maintain them. Attendees will also learn to identify fire types based on fuel (e.g., wood, grease, electrical equipment) and match them with the correct extinguisher. Mr. Canfora will also address the principles of safety and evacuation. The training will emphasize avoiding being trapped by the fire, maintaining a clear path to an exit, and evacuating immediately if flames, heat, or smoke become unmanageable.

Those who attend will learn the P.A.S.S. method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) with fire extinguishers that will be onsite for you to use for practice (weather permitting); therefore, we recommend you wear comfortable attire. Our goal is to familiarize you with the general principles and hazards of using extinguishers to fight fires safely, with a strong emphasis on evacuating if the fire grows beyond control or if the person feels uncomfortable. Understanding the importance of regular checks of the extinguisher's condition, including pressure gauges, and the proper procedures for inspection and documentation will also be addressed.

A special thank you goes to Alex Nicholis Coon and the Massillon Museum for hosting this free event. To RSVP, please click on this link https://tinyurl.com/StarkFireSafety and enter your information by Monday, Sep. 29. Let me know if you have any difficulties with the link.
