On June 19, Mason City native Doug Meyer learned the alarming memory loss, slurred speech, declining coordination, and executive function issues he’d been experiencing with growing intensity for months had a single cause- a noncancerous brain tumor over two and a half inches across.
One week later, he underwent surgery to have it removed. A month after that, the large section of his skull that had been temporarily removed (and replaced) for this procedure became infected, and again he went under the knife, this time to remove the bone plate and replace it with a titanium mesh plate. While he has been living in Bloomington for most of his adult life, Doug is now back in Mason City to recover at his parents’ house.
To offset the expenses related to the entire ordeal and its recovery, friends, family, and the community are invited to attend a benefit showing of “Jurassic World: Rebirth” at 1pm Saturday, August 23 at the Arlee. Doors will open at noon, so attendees will have plenty of time to say hello to the man of the hour, as well as to check out some of the special items available for sale as well as a dino-themed raffle that includes an authentic fossil and Jurassic World lego set, with proceeds going toward helping with Doug’s expenses.
Admission is by donation ($10 minimum recommended). While there won’t be a mask mandate for this event, it is noted that keeping Doug infection-free right now is especially important and guests who are feeling less than healthy are requested to wear a mask for his protection.
