4th of July Fly Count! (on July 5th)

Perhaps you've participated in the Christmas Bird Count, but we're willing to bet you've never been to a 4th of July Fly Count!

Join us for the first ever 4th of July Fly Count at Gjerloff Prairie! This is a BioBlitz / community science-style event where we will be taking a closer look at the fly diversity at Gjerloff Prairie. We'll have insect nets and jars available for capturing flies for observation and will spend time hiking and searching around wildflower-rich areas to photograph what we see! We'll also be using iNaturalist to document our finds.

Fly diversity in native prairie ecosystems is astounding and they serve critically important roles as pollinators, predators, decomposers and parasitoids. Understanding more about these incredible insects is one of the first steps in conserving biodiversity and the ecosystems they depend on. So join us in an effort to learn more and help document fly diversity in our area! We plan to host this as an annual event. Happy 4th of JuFly!

Meet us at the Education Center at Gjerloff Prairie at 9:30am. We will provide snacks and drinks. This is a free event.
