Our next visit will be to Crofton Pumping Station to see its two magnificent Beam Engines in action. The Station was built in 1807-9 to supply water to the highest point of the Kennet & Avon Canal, which links London and Bristol. The oldest engine was installed in 1812 and is the only one of that age in the world which is still capable of doing its original job in its original location.
There’s plenty to see and do for visitors to this Grade 1 listed attraction, particularly those interested in steam engines and canals and the visit is likely to last about 2-3 hours.
The best way to get there is by road and parking is available nearby. Car park charges are £1.50 for 2 hours, or £3.00 for all day (until 16:30 when the Pumping Station closes) and the machine is coin only. Charges apply to all vehicles without exception or concessions and the essential income is used to support Crofton’s charitable objectives and helps to maintain the Beam Engines. On steaming days, such as ours, additional parking is usually available in the adjacent field, accessible via the short track to opposite the main gate. The grass surface of this parking area may not be suitable for all vehicles and its use is therefore at the driver’s discretion and risk.
For those using public transport, the nearest Railway Station is Bedwyn, from where it will be necessary for you to get a taxi to the Pumping Station, where we will be meeting up at 12:30 for a short Introductory talk, followed by a tour of the site.
The exact location is Crofton Pumping Station, Crofton, Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8 3DW (///panel.unsettled.doted).
The Smithy Tea Room, an on-site café will be open serving tea, coffee and a variety of soft drinks, as well as cakes, biscuits and other delights and it is open from 10:30 to 16:00. For those requiring something a bit more substantial, the following pub has been recommended:- The Swan at Wilton - follow this link.
The charge for this visit is £13 per head (£16 for non-members) and payment details together with final joining instructions will be sent out later once your place has been confirmed.
