Discover the magic of shrink pots.
The history of shrink pots, also known as "shrink boxes" or "tub pots," is deeply rooted in Scandinavian and broader Northern European traditions. This woodworking technique has been practiced for centuries, with evidence suggesting its use as far back as the Viking Age.
Originally, shrink pots were created out of necessity, providing a practical means to store food, liquids, and other essentials in a time before modern containers were available. The craft was particularly prevalent in rural communities, where resources were limited, and every piece of wood had to be utilized efficiently.
The process leverages the natural properties of green wood, which is easier to carve and shrinks as it dries. By inserting a dry wooden base into a groove carved into the green wood, artisans created a tight, natural seal without the need for additional fasteners. This method not only ensured the durability of the containers but also showcased the ingenuity and resourcefulness of early woodworkers.
Over time, shrink pots became more than just utilitarian objects. They evolved into decorative pieces, often featuring intricate carvings and designs that reflected the cultural and artistic traditions of their makers. Today, the craft of making shrink pots is celebrated for its historical significance and its embodiment of sustainable, functional design.
On our "Scandinavian Shrink Pot Crafting" course, you will immerse yourself in the ancient Viking tradition of making shrink pots. This hands-on workshop is designed for both beginners and seasoned woodworkers who wish to explore this unique and sustainable craft.
You will start by selecting and preparing green wood, learning how its moisture content makes it ideal for carving. Step-by-step, you will hollow out the log, carve the essential groove, and fit a dry wooden base. As the green wood dries and contracts, you'll witness the creation of a natural, tight seal—a hallmark of this time-honored technique.
Throughout the course, you'll also gain insights into the historical and cultural significance of shrink pots in Scandinavian societies. By the end of the workshop, you'll have a beautifully crafted shrink pot, adorned with your choice of carvings or patterns, to take home. Join us to create a functional piece of history with your own hands.
