Ready to explore the outdoors safely and independently? Join our one-day Introduction to Navigation course and gain the essential skills you need to confidently use a map and compass in the UK countryside.
Set in the beautiful and peaceful Marlborough Downs, this hands-on outdoor course is perfect for beginners or anyone looking to refresh their skills. With a small instructor-to-participant ratio, you’ll get personalised support and plenty of practice time.
What You’ll Learn
This practical navigation course covers all the fundamental map and compass skills needed for safe and enjoyable adventures in the hills, moors, and mountains of the UK, including:
Understanding and using 1:25,000 OS maps
Reading grid references and using romer scales
Interpreting map features and symbols
Setting the map using a compass
Handrailing and following linear features
Rights of way and access awareness
How to use route cards and pacing cards
Basic compass bearings and orientation
Whether you’re planning solo walks or joining group hikes, these skills will help you stay safe, build confidence, and make the most of your time in nature.

You’ll just need to bring your own lunch, suitable outdoor clothing, and a sense of adventure. A recommended kit list will be emailed to all participants in advance.
