Lillies on the Land is based on the testimony of women who worked as land girls during World War 2, gathered through interviews and letters. Four women, from different backgrounds, and with little or no previous experience or awareness of life on a farm, tell their stories through narration and enactment, interspersed with snatches of songs from the period. A moving, funny and thought-provoking play, this is very much an ensemble piece, with the four actresses taking on many of the roles within those stories. The characters are:
Poppy – a girl from a privileged home background, keen on fashion and with a zest for life. She quickly learns to muck in.
Margie – a Geordie from Newcastle, warm and childlike who has the most difficult experiences to deal with than the others but still maintains her energy and enthusiasm.
Vera – an educated bank employee who is keen to explore life outside the strict confines of her employment and home life. Thoughtful and well read she is “perhaps the most lonely of the four”.
Peggy – a happy, confident cockney with a positive attitude to her experiences and a sense of humour (most of the time!)
Age range between 20s-40s
Actresses must be reasonably fit (there’s a lot of moving boxes around!), have a good sense of humour, be flexible and be able to hold a tune (singing will be acapella).
