Join us on Wednesday, July 23rd for light refreshments and discussion about our newest, temporary, traveling exhibit Before Slavery. This exhibit and lecture offers a compelling exploration into the lives, culture, and legacy of the African people from Bunce Island and the enduring heritage of the Gullah community.
The lecture will be given by guest speaker, Dr. Seneca Vaught, whose teaching and research specializations are applied historical studies of race, culture, and policy in the African Diaspora, community engagement, and immersive study abroad experiences.
He has published articles in Souls, Spectrum, Groundings, and Afro-Americans in New York Life and History. Vaught has won numerous awards for teaching, community engagement, and applied historical research.
Recently, he was awarded the John B. Muir Editor Award and the Williams Wells Brown Award for his accomplishments in these areas. In addition to numerous book chapters and multimedia projects, Vaught was formerly editor of Afro-Americans in New York Life and History.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the rich African traditions that survived the Middle Passage and continue to influence Southern culture today. Before Slavery is an exhibit from the Vibrant Health Association. For more information visit
