Our program explores the duality of human experience—the visible and the hidden, the shared and the personal. The repertoire pairs texts and musical settings that reflect parallel emotional currents: joy and grief, light and darkness, longing and celebration. The first half features contrasting settings of the Sanctus and Jubilate Deo, highlighting how the same words can evoke different emotions across time and style. Poetic works by Christina Rossetti and Sara Teasdale further illustrate themes of loss and joy. The second half presents sacred hymns and spirituals, including works by Daniel Pinkham and Dan Forrest, as well as American Shaker, Sacred Harp, and African American spiritual traditions. The concert closes with Sweet Rivers, an original setting of an 18th-century hymn text, celebrating the hope and love that guide us along life’s winding path.
This program will be performed twice; once on Saturday, May 17 at 7pm at St. Catherine's Episcopal Church in Marietta, and again on Sunday, May 18 at 4pm at Fickling Hall, Mercer University in Macon. Please double check dates to be sure you're purchasing tickets for the correct performance.
