Join the Mayor and Charter Trustees of Margate to commemorate the vital role played by Margate in the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation.
The event will begin with a service at the Lifeboat House, followed by a parade to Margate Train Station, where the Mayor will offer refreshments in tribute to the efforts of Mayor George Broome Farrar, who spent four days supporting the returning soldiers in 1940.
“During the evacuation of Dunkirk over 46,000 men came home via Margate, ships docked 24/7 using the Jetty. Margate Mayor George Broome Farrar and his wife spent 4 days and nights at Margate station feeding the soldiers returning and on the 5th day slept in the chairs in the Mayor’s Office.”
The lifeboat will then launch to lay a wreath at sea in memory of those who served and were lost.
