We are pleased to announce a Meet the Author and Book Signing with Larry Toerber.
He has written a book called "Exercise Tiger, the Silent D-Day 'Link' of World War II."
Larry's book details how his Uncle Mearl's label, "Missing in Action" (MIA) was just one piece of the untold and buried Exercise Tiger story.
Exercise Tiger was the largest Allied naval disaster of World War II.
Toerber offers the reader a detailed account of the tragic rehearsal for the D-Day invasion, and resultant Supreme Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s order of secrecy that ultimately buried Exercise Tiger along with at least 749 American soldiers.
The surviving soldiers were told never to speak of the “event." Toerber completed 11 years of research, and then took three years to write this book. Toerber was able to interview one of the surviving soldiers who offered on the scene fascinating knowledge of Exercise Tiger. That survivor was a Maquoketan, Robert “Bob” Stockham.
Toerber was recognized by the National Exercise Tiger Association with their 2023 Journalism Award and the Civilian Commendation Medal Award.
Please join us for an interesting and educational evening with the author on July 24th at 5:30 in the community room at the Maquoketa Public Library.
Books will be available to purchase for $20.00.
Light refreshments will be served.
