Mankato Baltics Fun Days Festival

Mankato Baltics vintage base ball club will again host a festival with other area clubs immediately after the North Mankato Fun Days Parade on Saturday, July 12. Games take place on the Monroe Elementary fields at Center and Garfield streets. They are free.
Clubs play following rules from 1860 when the game was new. It was common to play on any field that was available, with “bags” put out as bases and “ground rules” dictating how they worked with unique physical situations. No gloves were used, rules dictated how underhanded pitches were delivered, and a drive caught after one bounce were still an out.
Participating clubs are the Blue Caps from Menomonie, Wisconsin, and Rum River Rovers from Anoka County. A gentleman’s game, players are expected to police themselves, though an umpire is present to call foul balls and help educate any “cranks,” the name for spectators.
All players should be sporting new caps and some will have new uniforms, courtesy of a donation from the Chad and Tara Surprenant Family Fund of the Mankato Area Foundation.
