Let's go to the park and fly! Join the Hell's Kitchen Kilowatts for the *second* edition of our summer workshop series on Lindy Hop air steps!
This is an open-level air steps workshop for all dancers who want to work on their air, from beginners who wanna learn their first flashy moves, to advanced fliers looking for pointers on their knickerbockers. Whatever your level, you won't just get instruction on how to do the steps, but also training in the process of how to learn, practice, and perform air steps safely, from a dance team with multiple decades of collective experience.
*** Note the later time! 4 - 6 PM this time so hopefully it's a little cooler ***
Breakdown:
First hour (or so) - a guided workshop taught by Kilowatts co-captains Jaime and Tim. We'll break down and teach a classic beginner air step, and also teach you the *process* of how we practice - how we stay safe, manage risk, take care of our bodies, and practice affirmative consent the whole time.
Next hour (or so) - Intermediate plus air steps practice! Come with air steps in mind that you want to work on, or we'll provide suggestions for fun, level-appropriate steps. Jaime and Tim will break everyone up into smaller groups where you can work on your aerial of choice with continued guidance, advice, and spotters. This is a great way to level up and try a slightly more advanced air step within a safe, supported community.
No partner necessary!
Location:
Central Park by Columbus Circle. If it rains we'll move to a studio at Ripley Grier or Pearl. Watch this event for announcements.
Cost:
$20 for the first hour, $40 for the whole thing (the first hour is required if you want to come to the intermediate plus practice).
About the instructors:
Jaime:
Jaime began her dance training at the age of four in Milford, CT. In 2006 she received her BA in dance from Hofstra University and went on to perform professionally with several NYC based choreographers. In 2010 Jaime met Tony Fraser and together, they quickly became a dynamic partnership in the swing dance community. Together they have performed and taught various styles of swing dance throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. Jaime formed Kilowatt Dance Theater in 2014 to showcase an array of dance styles with a strong focus on swing and jazz. Kilowatt Dance Theater has performed at such notable events as Jacob's Pillow, Battery Dance Festival, Rochester Fringe Festival, and several seasons with Jazz Choreography Enterprises.
Tim:
A New York City-based professional dancer, Tim Abrahamsen has been Lindy Hopping since 2006, and performing and coaching aerials for a decade. He has danced with groups in New York City like The Big Apple Lindy Hoppers, Harvest Moon Hoppers, and Hell’s Kitchen Kilowatts, and has performed at events and venues all over the city, including The International Lindy Hop Championships, The USS Intrepid, and Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City. Tim loves teaching beginners and making Lindy Hop fun and accessible for as many people as possible. Ask me to dance sometime!
Hell’s Kitchen Kilowatts:
Founded by Tony Fraser and Jaime Shannon in 2013, the Hell's Kitchen Kilowatts are a fast-dancing, high-flying, New York City-based Lindy Hop performance and competition troupe. They've performed and competed at events all over New York and elsewhere, most notably the Canadian Swing Championships, Lincoln Center's Summer for the City, New York Lindy Exchange, Gotham Jazz Festival, and the USS Intrepid, just to name a few.
