A Choral Feast: Missa Brevis in B-flat, K. 275

"A Choral Feast" presents the opportunity to experience great sacred choral repertoire within their original context of a worship service.

On Sunday, October 12 at 11 am, St. Bartholomew’s Choir presents Mozart's "Missa Brevis in B-flat, K. 275" with chamber orchestra.

Mozart’s “Missa Brevis” (No. 275 in Köchel’s catalog of Mozart’s works), was first performed at Salzburg Cathedral in 1777, but may have been composed as early as 1772, when Mozart was sixteen. It is scored for choir, quartet of soloists, strings, and organ. The Kyrie elegantly contrasts the vocal quartet with the full ensemble. The Gloria opens with a chromatic and dramatic musical descent, depicting peace coming down to earth (“et in terra pax hominibus”). The work is a model of concision and drama, covering an extraordinary musical landscape as it explores the themes of peace on earth, incarnation, forgiveness, praise to the almighty, and everlasting glory, among others.
