Opening Reception – Trygve Lie Gallery, New York
📅 Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM
You are warmly invited to the opening of A Dying Norway – in a Living America? at the Trygve Lie Gallery, presented in collaboration with the Norwegian Seamen’s Church.
This photography exhibition by Lars Idar Waage explores the lives of Norwegian-American descendants in the area around Norway and Stavanger, Illinois – the very community founded by “The Sloopers” who arrived in America aboard the sloop Restauration in 1825. The portraits capture what remains of the Norwegian identity in a community that once stood as a living symbol of emigration, faith, and belonging.
The opening takes place just one day before the Restauration replica sails into New York harbor, marking the 200th anniversary of the original voyage. The exhibition reflects on this remarkable journey and asks: What is left of Norway in America today?
