Folding Lotus Flowers: A Joss Paper Workshop

In this workshop, participants will experience a practical introduction to the tradition of Ghost Money and learn how to fold Joss Paper into lotus flowers.

Joss paper, a type of paper incense, is still widely used in Taiwan for religious and ancestor worship. Offered as is or typically folded into boats, gold ingots, and lotus flowers, the paper is burnt during major festivals of the lunar calendar as well as religious and funerary rituals.  A gesture of care, burning what is known as “Ghost Money” for the deceased, allows the living to ensure ancestors have enough financial security in the afterlife, covering their needs for food, clothing, and ensuring safe passage in the spiritual realm. It is also used either as an offering for wish-making or to appease lingering “hungry ghosts”. More closely associated with Buddhism, the lotus flower shape is as a symbolic currency, believed to help the deceased pay off karmic debt and offer comfort in the spiritual realm. 

In folding and burning Ghost Money, participants will take part in a gesture that reaches beyond the irreducible distance of parting, a tradition of care despite all endings. 

This 90-minute workshop will supply all necessary materials. Participation is free of charge, but limited to 15 spots due to material restrictions. Please book in advance.
