About the event

Eroteme presents : Anthony Pateras / John Chantler, Seymour Wright & Steve Noble
Eroteme’s September run continues with two performances at St Margaret’s Church, Manchester.

Australian composer and pianist Anthony Pateras makes his Manchester debut with a rare solo performance for piano. His work spans composition, electroacoustics and improvisation, with commissions and performances worldwide.

The second set features John Chantler (synthesizer), Steve Noble (drums) and Seymour Wright (alto saxophone) — a trio formed in 2017 and documented on two albums, Front and Above and Atlantis. Their music moves between sparse textures and dense, energetic passages. Chantler’s serrated electronics entwine with Wright’s feedback-laced saxophone and Noble’s metallic percussion, creating an unpredictable sound world.

John Chantler / Steve Noble / Seymour Wright
Since forming in 2017, the trio has developed a distinctive language through performances across Europe and two albums — Front and Above (recorded live at Café OTO) and Atlantis (Room40, 2020).

“Atlantis is an exhilarating listen, equally thanks to its fierce free jazz and brightly textural abstraction.” – Antonio Poscic, The Wire (Feb 2020)
John Chantler (Stockholm)
Known for solo electronic work that ranges from richly layered ambient landscapes to visceral explosions of sound, Chantler has released on labels including Room40 and 1703 Skivbolaget. His practice spans synthesizer improvisation, composition for pipe organ, and collaborative projects.

Steve Noble (London)
A central figure in UK improvised music for over four decades, Noble is renowned for his restless invention, precision and intensity on the drums. Emerging from London’s post-punk and free improvisation scenes, he first came to prominence with Derek Bailey’s Company and has since worked with Peter Brötzmann, Keiji Haino, Evan Parker, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Ikue Mori and countless others. His playing combines explosive power with a finely tuned sense of texture and silence, making him one of the most distinctive percussionists of his generation.

Seymour Wright (London)
Wright is recognised for a radical and exploratory approach to the alto saxophone, drawing on feedback, extended techniques and structural experimentation. His projects include [A↔Z] with Alex Ward, collaborations with Paul Abbott, and the trio The Custodians of the Realm.

Together, the trio forges a sound that is both densely physical and intricately detailed — an ongoing dialogue between three of the most active and idiosyncratic improvisers working today.
