You're warmly invited to a special community event where we come together to remember, honour and celebrate the lives of those who have died. Whether your loss is recent or long ago, whether you are remembering a relative, friend, or beloved pet - all are welcome. Come with your family - young and old, with your friends, or come on your own.
This gentle gathering offers a space to reflect and keep the memory of our loved ones present in our lives. Throughout the afternoon, there will be a number of simple optional activities you can take part in, including a craft area to create small memorial items, quiet spaces for sharing or reflection, music, and a communal Memory Tree for placing your memorial items.
The event will include a Welcome to Country and a short ceremony at 2pm.
Location: Bicentenary Park, next to Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and adjoining our community's own 'Journey of Life Grief Garden'.
What to bring:
Please bring an item that holds meaning for you —such as a photo, keepsake, or something that belonged to the person (or animal) you are remembering. You may wish to keep this with you, or place it by the Memory Tree (to be taken home afterwards).
Please bring a picnic rug or chair, food and drinks to share with your group, and whatever helps you feel comfortable. Children are most welcome. To help keep the space safe and inclusive, we ask that no pets, glass or alcohol be brought. Tea & coffee will be available at the Neighbourhood Centre.
Background:
This is the first time we are holding Picnic Among Friends in Maleny, and we hope it becomes a meaningful tradition.
The event is organised by a group of local community members, including representatives from TULE (Tying Up Loose Ends), the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, and locals committed to nurturing a more caring and connected approach to death, grief and remembrance in our community.
We gratefully acknowledge the inspiration and generous support of the Picnic Among Friends organisers in Sydney where it has been held for many years.
This event is supported by a grant from Sunshine Coast Council.
