Summer Phenology Walk with Sylvia Marek

Join naturalist Sylvia Marek for a guided nature walk taking an in-depth look at signs of nature’s seasonal changes in our prairie, savanna, and woodland plant and animal communities during the summer season when the prairie is full of flowers, insects are active and birds are caring for their young. If you have read and enjoyed Sylvia’s written monthly phenology reports for our park, this is your chance to join her in the field for a closer look at seasonal biological events. The walk will start and end at the parking lot and take us along many of Owen's trails, covering up to two miles over 1.5 hours at a botanist’s pace.

Sylvia has worked as a naturalist at the UW Madison Arboretum since 1979 and has led tours and taught classes there and elsewhere on subjects including owls, bluebirds and reading the landscape. She founded the Arboretum Bluebird Trail in 1988 and continues to monitor it. Sylvia has birded in over 10 countries and has many years of experience observing and recording phenology at local natural areas including Owen.

This program is best suited for adults and young people who are interested in quietly observing and gaining a deeper understanding of the Park’s plants and animals.
