This summer, we will continue our tradition of reading a modern classic, exploring over three meetings Paul and the Power of Grace (Eerdmans, 2020) — a more accessible version of the classic Paul and the Gift (Eerdmans, 2015) — both by acclaimed New Testament scholar John Barclay. This group will be led by Garwood (Gar) Anderson, a Distinguished Fellow in Biblical Studies at the Lumen Center and a Professor of New Testament at Nashotah House. Gar will unpack this highly significant thesis in three meetings starting Wednesday, July 9, with subsequent sessions scheduled by the group.
Some of the deepest conflicts in Christian history center on grace, salvation, works, and obedience. The writings of the Apostle Paul are right in the middle of these debates. Barclay’s original (670-page) Paul and the Gift spurred a paradigm shift, and happily, he summarized the substance of that magnum opus in the more accessible Paul and the Power of Grace.
Our reading group will consider Barclay's more ancient and nuanced account of grace and deepen our understanding of the Apostle Paul, salvation, and Christian existence. Please join us.
LEADER:
Garwood Anderson, PhD, served as Dean and President of Nashotah House Theological Seminary and is now the seminary’s Donald J. Parsons Distinguished Professor of Biblical Interpretation. He is also a Distinguished Fellow in biblical studies at the Lumen Center.
We will meet three times, beginning on July 9 at 4:30 pm.
