About this Event

Discover the art of capturing birds through the lens in this immersive, three-part course designed for photographers of all levels. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to hone your craft, this class offers the perfect blend of education, experience, and creative growth. From classroom learning to field shooting and image critique, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to photograph birds with both precision and artistry. While this workshop is sponsored by Canon, all camera makes and models are welcomed.

Section 1 – Classroom Instruction

Friday, September 5 | 6–7:30 PM

Location: The Camera Company, 6742 Odana Rd

Build a solid foundation in bird photography, covering gear essentials, camera settings, composition tips, lighting techniques, and best practices for capturing birds in flight or natural behavior. You’ll also explore bird habits and habitats to increase your success in the field.

Section 2 – In the Field

Saturday, September 6 | 8–10 AM

Location: Stricker’s and Tiedeman Pond, Middleton

Take your skills outdoors during a guided field session at a local birding hotspot. Apply what you’ve learned in real time with instructor support, as you practice anticipating action, using natural light effectively, and photographing birds ethically in their environments. Canon will have a supply of camera bodies and long lenses for you to use!

Section 3 – Image Critique and Feedback

Tuesday, September 9 | 6–7:30 PM

Attend via Zoom (link to be supplied to attendees)

Bring it all together with a collaborative review of your favorite images. You’ll receive thoughtful, personalized feedback focused on technique, storytelling, and artistic vision—helping you grow both technically and creatively.

Prerequisites:

  • A camera with a long lens (300mm or more) is required. The Camera Company does have rental lenses however supply is limited. Remember, Canon will have a supply of Canon camera bodies and lenses.
