Maastricht has always been a strategic city — ever since Roman times.
Between 1579 and 1794, it was besieged at least 7 times. The city and its people fought:
– against, then with the Spanish
– against, then with the Dutch
– against and with the French

As its defenses expanded, Maastricht earned the nickname: “Fortress Maastricht.”

On this tour, you’ll visit the southern fortifications that still remain — and hear the dramatic story of a city caught in the middle of European wars.
