Wenling Huang’s debut novel Strange Places depicts two families in 1930s who built a close friendship in the wartime in Shanghai, showing how ordinary people despite obstacles still hold the kindness in the difficult time.

Strange Places covers 100 years, from Nazi massacre, world war 2, China’s inner war to Taiwan’s White Terror. The beginning of this novel starts from the grandson of Chiang Ning, Jan Sonntag, who found a black wooden box left by his grandfather. With the photo and the necklace in the box, Jan decided to find out the secrets of his family and why his grandfather refused ti admit he’s from China.
