Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet brings their Grammy-winning music to Sydnor Hall at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 pm. Pedro's quartet takes us on a journey beginning with the music of the1930s tango masters heard primarily in cafés and dance halls and proceeding to the tango nouveau, epitomized by Astor Piazzolla who brought tango into prominent venues, with passionate compositions that were not for dancing but for concert performances. Pedro Giraudo has continued the evolution, taking elements from Argentine tango, European classical music and American jazz, and combining them gracefully and organically, bringing something new and exciting to the form, while retaining all the lushness and beauty that characterizes the genre. In 2018, Pedro’s style won him the Latin Grammy for “Best Tango Album.” This evening’s journey will be accompanied by short anecdotes about the main figures in the history of tango, as well as some explanation of its principal characteristics. Whatever you think when you hear the word “tango,” Pedro Giraudo will surprise you.
