About the event

Metacognition in the Primary Classroom
A practical session for KS1–KS2 teachers on boosting pupil metacognition through simple, effective classroom strategies.

About this Event

This practical, evidence-informed course is designed for primary teachers (KS1–KS2) and explores how to effectively develop metacognitive skills in children to support deeper, more independent learning. Drawing on research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), Daniel Willingham and tools like Walkthrus, the session unpacks what metacognition is, why it matters and how it can be embedded across the curriculum without disrupting classroom flow.

Teachers will examine the core components of metacognitive knowledge and regulation, discover tools such as ‘think aloud’ modelling, KWL grids, sentence stems and structured self-questioning, and consider how these can be tailored for different subjects and learners, including those with SEND. The course also includes time for reflection and discussion, helping teachers identify what they already do well and plan next steps to build a consistent culture of metacognitive thinking across their school.

Trainer

Penny has been a dedicated educator since 2000. As Deputy Head, she leads on curriculum, metacognition, pedagogy, staff induction, ECT development and coaching through deliberate practice. She’s proud to work within the Ted Wragg Trust where she is supported to champion professional growth across the school.

For several years, Penny was the Maths Tutor with Exeter Consortium Schools’ Alliance (ECSA), supporting Early Years and Primary trainee teachers for taught elements of their course. Recently, she’s been delivering targeted sessions on adaptive teaching and questioning strategies. Exwick Heights is a valued host school for Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP), where Penny’s mentorship nurtures the next generation of teachers.

Known for her energy, expertise and unwavering passion, Penny remains as committed today as she was at the start of her journey in education.
