A Tip of The Hat to Western Swing

‘Western swing is the hybrid of jazz and country music which neither would invite into their home’ said a music historian in Downbeat magazine.

The genre was popularised in the 1930s and 40s by bands such as Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, who would travel enormous distances throughout the Southwestern states to play dances and state fairs. The music was mostly up-tempo popular songs with short and sharp improvised instrumental solos between vocal refrains. The repertoire was very similar to that of their jazz playing contemporaries in the Northern cities of New York and Chicago, but instrumentation tended to include guitars, fiddles and accordions rather than saxophones, clarinets and brass instruments.

Andrew London and The Swing Voters deliver a repertoire of Western Swing classics and original songs, cherry-picked from Andrew’s time with The Cattlestops, Hot Club Sandwich and his recent self-named trio which includes partner Kirsten London on bass and local legend Wayne Mason on piano. Wellington’s favourite guitarist, Nick Granville, joins to round out the quartet of Western Swing lovers, who invite you to share their passion for ‘cowboy jazz’.
