Matariki is more than just a date on the calendar. Rooted in the ancient traditions of Māori astronomy and storytelling, it heralds the New Year — a time to honour those who have passed, celebrate the present with whānau (family) and community, to plant seeds of hope for our dreams and goals for the future.
It’s a uniquely indigenous celebration, rich in heritage and meaning, and increasingly embraced by people from all walks of life here in Aotearoa, Nu Tireni, New Zealand.
and then Te Hikoi Whakawātea i raro i te Wairere - The Cleansing/Releasing Walk beneath the Waterfall. A ritual of cleansing, accept and acknowledge past injustices and grief, to welcome the renewal of a fresh, abundant New Year.

6:00am - Gather at main entrance lawn at Percy's Scenic Reserve for a Brief, then hikoi up to Puriri to observe Matariki
6:15am - Matariki Korero
6:30am - Hikoi te Wairere:

Note: the clean clothing you wear, make sure you have also put clean clothes through just water rinse. Get rid of any cleaning detergent.
ALSO: do not spray any perfume or deodorant on before you arrive.
6:50am - Karakia & I raro i te Wairere
(3 times each under te Waterfall - trust me by the 3rd it's no longer makariri, it's warm) then enjoy hikoi back to the main track/entrance absolutely drenched.........soooooooo refreshing!!!!!!!
to the Restroom to change into dry clothes and enjoy a hot drink and parakuihi (breakfast).
NO SMOKING TOBBACCO. NO VAPING. NO SWEARING. NO SHOUTING. PHONES TURNED OFF.
