About the event

The Herschels: Pioneers of Deep Sky Astronomy
Maestro by day, astronomer by night! Amid the fashionable whirl of Georgian Bath (think TV’s Bridgerton!) concert master, organist and composer William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus from his back yard with a homemade telescope. Soon he and his sister Caroline (a renowned singer) turned their full attention to astronomy, ably assisted by their brothers and eventually William's son John. King George III eager to get in on the action, installed William near Windsor castle as his personal astronomer. The family laid the foundations of modern astronomy, discovering dozens of comets, establishing the Solar system’s motion though space, mapping the entire celestial sphere and pushing astronomers to consider the universe as a place of constant change and motion.

Hear the full story from our guest speaker, Charles Draper on Monday evening. Dugan Hall 7pm.
