Music of the Circle - with David Joyce and Linda Stonestreet

What:

On SATURDAY afternoon, 5/24/25, from 1:30-3:30, we’ll be holding a special open circle to make music through collective musical improvisation, body percussion and movement. These forms of playing music are for connection rather than performance and are based on principles synthesised and sourced from the Instituto Música do Círculo, Rhiannon, and Bobby McFerrin. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to meet and dive into the fun of making music and connecting collectively while building community and expanding creativity. There will be guided musical games & exercises designed to Open up the music that already LIVES in you. So, be prepared to PLAY, MOVE, and SING (maybe even shout & make silly sounds :) and certainly get more connected to your sisters & brothers in song.

Where: We will meet at the “Amphitheater” at Woodley park (map is below)…. it’s lovely. (If we need to move, we’ll try to stay somewhat nearby).

When: We gather at 1:20 to find the spot, visit and get acclimated. The plan is to sing until 3:30 pm. Enter off Woodley Ave.

Wear comfortable clothes that allow movement. Afterwards, you may want to take a walk around the beautiful, nearby Wildlife Preserve. Please invite your friends and loved ones to join us in the Circle - This is a Community event, and the more, the merrier.

Who: This workshop is co-facilitated by Linda Stonestreet and David Joyce.

David Joyce is a Studio singer and keyboard player based in Los Angeles, and a Grammy winner (1986 Best Jazz Vocal Group). A student of life, he's also a professor of music at several colleges; Vocal Department Head at the LA College of Music since 2015. In Italy & Spain, he leads clinics and workshops on a variety of musical topics. He's toured the world and played with the likes of Burt Bacharach, Natalie Cole & many others; he’s sung in the studio and/or "live" with Frank Sinatra, U2, Michael Jackson, Oasis, David Byrne, Chris Isaac, Neil Young, etc. David is also an artist/songwriter, with several CD's out (Dharma Buds, Gopher Gods). He’s studied the world of “Circle Singing” for over 10 years and has particularly been influenced & impacted by the methodology of Musica do Circulo (from Brazil).

Linda Stonestreet is a Singer Songwriter, vocal improviser and ceremonialist. She has studied with Rhiannon since 2016 and has twice graduated Rhiannon's esteemed All the Way in program. And is mentored in the teaching course from Musica Do Ciculo founders. She believes that song is medicine for these times, for all times. And, as such she is inspired to hold space for music as a collective endeavor by synthesising theses methods and applying her own flair. Through the use of movement, sound and sometimes words, she works collectively to create rhythmic patterns and melodic structures to add to the flow and depth of group experiences. The purpose of this gathering for her is to elevate the spirit. Singers of all levels welcome.

Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, she is mentored by Rhiannon in her Vocal River traditions and guides vocal improvisational groups based on Rhiannon’s Vocal River Body of Improvisational practices and Musica Do Circulo. As a recording artist with 50+ songs published across multiple-genre. As a former civil servant in California State’s Natural Resources Division, she utilizes her experience in State government practices and expertise in water issues to grow capacity in rural communities throughout California with Rural Community Assistance Corp. She is initiated in Andean indigenous traditions mentored by Marti Spiegelman MFA and by Jose Luis Herrera.
