Understanding Tea Traditions:
For those curious about the Rich Traditions of Tea, here's a brief guide to various Tea Times:
* Early Morning "Tea Tray" or "Provisional Breakfast":
Suggested Time: Before a full breakfast.
Description: A simple refreshment of Tea and perhaps a small biscuit with jam served to the bedchamber or at your favorite cozy chair upon waking.
* Elevenses (Morning Break):
Suggested Time: Around 10:00-11:00 AM.
Description: A short Mid-Morning Break for Tea, often with a light snack like biscuits or cake.
* Afternoon Tea (Traditional/Formal):
Suggested Time: Typically between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
Description: An elegant, leisurely affair featuring delicate finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and an assortment of small pastries and tarts all served with Tea in Fine China.
* Cream Tea (Simple Snack):
Suggested Time: Typically enjoyed in the afternoon, as a lighter version of Afternoon Tea.
Description: The Simplest Tea Service, consisting only of Scones, Clotted Cream, Jam, and Tea, Of course!
* High Tea (Working Class Meal):
Suggested Time: Usually served Later in the Afternoon or Early Evening, between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Description: Traditionally a more substantial, Evening Meal served at a Dining Table, often including heartier fare like meats, fish, eggs, and bread, alongside Tea, of course!
“Dinner” is the most common and formal term for the Principal Meal of the day. Its timing shifted throughout the era, moving from early afternoon to later in the evening for the upper classes.
“Supper” is often a lighter, Less Formal Evening Meal, served Later Than Dinner, especially if dinner was served in the mid-afternoon. It could also refer to A Meal Taken Before Bed.
“Late Dinner” If served particularly late, it might be referred to as A Late Tea Dinner and would typically be served 8:00 PM or 9 PM.
* Fruits: A variety of Fruits are served during Tea, often depending on the season and availability:
- Berries - Strawberries, Raspberries, Gooseberries, Greengages, and Cherries are popular, especially in Summer.
- Tree Fruits - Apples and Pears, readily available, graced the Tea Table particularly in Autumn, with Plums also being a common sight.
- Grapes - Small bunches of black or red Grapes often served as Elegant Edible Accents on serving plates.
- Figs - Luscious halved or quartered Dark Figs were also a Delightful addition.
- Currants - Both Red and Black Currants were valued for their Vibrant Appearance as much as their Taste.
Oranges - While Expensive and often Given As Gifts, Oranges were imported in the Winter.
** Fruits might be served Fresh, as part of Tarts (like Strawberry Tartlets), Dessert, or as Preserves and Jams accompanying Scones.
