A Night to Remember the Legacy of Black August and Reignite Our Fight for Black Worker Justice
Join the Southern California Black Worker Hub for Regional Organizing and our partners for the 2nd Annual Black August Celebration, a powerful evening of remembrance and resistance.
This can’t-miss event is a unique opportunity for Black workers from all backgrounds, community activists, worker centers, union leaders, philanthropists, legislators, and other allies to gather, hear about our California Worker Outreach Project (CWOP 5.0) #EchoBlackVoices campaign, and be part of the movement to build Black Worker Power.
What is Black August?
Black August is an acknowledgment and commemoration of the countless organizers, activists, and freedom fighters who have sacrificed their freedom and lives in the struggle for Black liberation. Black August, observed each August, originated in California prisons during the 1970s by Black freedom fighters to commemorate the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners, raise awareness about Pr*son conditions, and honor the radical tradition of Black resistance against systemic oppression and anti-Black state violence.
Black August 2025
This Black August, we will gather in the spirit of revolutionary love and community to honor the Black freedom fighters who came before us—and to reconnect around our ongoing fight for racial justice and economic equity for Black workers of today and tomorrow. You won’t want to miss this community-rooted celebration of Black labor, resistance, resilience and future-forward organizing.
Expect a night filled with:
Let us rise together in the tradition of George Jackson, political prisoners who’ve led hunger strikes, the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Dr. King and the Memphis sanitation workers of 1968, A. Philip Randolph and the 1925 Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in Harlem, Assata Shakur and every freedom fighter who labored for our liberation, plus the generations of Black workers who have–and continue to–demand dignity and justice. We have always been central to the fight for justice. Let’s continue the work together to fight for equitable access and pathways to quality jobs, worker protections, and wellness in the workplace. Join us as we uplift Black worker voices and leadership – today, tomorrow, always!
