The National Museum of Mexican Art presents the 31st annual Sor Juana Festival, honoring one of Mexico’s greatest writers, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Join culinary historian and ArtBites founder Maite Gomez-Rejón for a delicious evening of cooking, conversation, and tastings as we celebrate one of Mexico’s most iconic figures—Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. In this unique event, chef Maite Gomez-Rejón will lead a cooking conversation, demonstration, and tasting inspired by Sor Juana's cookbook.
A 17th-century Mexican nun who valued and fought for a woman’s right to education, Juana was a celebrated playwright, mathematician and poet in her own time and continues to inspire women to this day. Through this unique festival, we celebrate the legacy of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and pay tribute to the rich artistic accomplishments of Mexican women from across the globe.
The Sor Juana Festival continues to challenge conventions and amplify voices that shape the future of leadership and artistry. This year’s theme, “Redefining Narratives Through Impact,” highlights the transformative power of first-voice experiences, celebrating women who break boundaries and inspire the next generation of visionaries.
Gomez-Rejón, known for exploring the intersection of food, art, and history, will delve into the culinary world of 17th-century Mexico, highlighting the rich cultural fusion of Indigenous, Spanish, and African influences that shaped the food of Sor Juana’s time. Attendees will experience a live cooking demo and enjoy a tasting of one of Sor Juana's recipes and gain deeper insight into Sor Juana’s life not only as a poet and philosopher but also as a woman who wrote about food with passion and precision.
