You Can’t Take It With You
Character Breakdown

The Sycamore/Vanderhof Household

Martin Vanderhof (Grandpa) - Age: 65–80
Warm, eccentric, and wise. Left the business world to enjoy life and has never looked back. The heart and soul of the family.
Philosophical with gentle humor.

Penelope “Penny” Sycamore - Age: 45–65
Grandpa’s daughter. Spirited, loving, and delightfully scattered. Writes plays and paints, purely for fun. Playful and vibrant.

Paul Sycamorem - Age: 45–65
Penny’s husband. Tinkerer and fireworks maker. Quietly devoted to his family and inventions. Great for character actors.

Essie Carmichael - Age: 20s–30s
Paul and Penny’s daughter. Wants to be a ballerina—lacks skill, but never stops dancing. Dreamy and sweet. Movement/dance background helpful but not required.

Ed Carmichael - Age: 20s–30s
Essie’s husband. Plays the xylophone, sets print type, and supports everyone’s odd projects. Nerdy, kind-hearted.

Alice Sycamore - Age: 20s–30s
The most “normal” in the family. Poised, smart, and trying to bridge her family’s wildness with her fiancé’s conservative roots.

The Kirbys

Tony Kirby - Age: 20s–30s
Alice’s fiancé. Wealthy, charming, and open to embracing a more colorful life with her family. Classic leading man with warmth.

Mr. Anthony W. Kirby - Age: 50–65
Tony’s father. Successful, formal, and deeply traditional. Has trouble connecting with people unlike him. Great straight man role with contrast to Sycamore chaos.

Mrs. Miriam Kirby - Age: 50–65
Tony’s mother. Conservative, easily scandalized, and resistant to change.

Friends, Guests, and Visitors

Rheba - Age: 30–60
The family’s cook and a grounding presence in the chaos. Sharp, warm, and observant.

Donald - Age: 30–60
Rheba’s boyfriend. Helps around the house. Relaxed and happy-go-lucky.

Mr. De Pinna - Age: 40–60
A former iceman who just never left. Now Paul’s firework assistant. Deadpan and offbeat. Physical comedy skills.

Boris Kolenkhov - Age: 30–60
Russian ballet teacher. Loud, passionate, and melodramatic. Thick accent and big energy. Requires strong character choices

Wilbur C. Henderson - Age: 25–50
IRS agent. Frustrated by Grandpa’s refusal to pay taxes. Ideal for a character actor.

Gay Wellington - Age: 30–60
An actress invited to read Penny’s play who arrives tipsy and gets even drunker. Requires comedic physicality and bold energy.

Grand Duchess Olga Katrina - Age: 40–70
An exiled Russian royal now working as a waitress. Proud, kind, and still clinging to grandeur. Accent and presence are key.

The G-Men (3 roles) - Age: 20–60
Government agents. High-energy, short appearances.
