As the mayors of Orono and Long Lake, we are pleased to announce the passage of the First Amendment to the Agreement and Contract for Fire Protection. (linked below) This marks meaningful progress in our collective commitment to providing the highest level of
fire protection and emergency services for our residents.
We are deeply grateful to the men and women who provide this protection and serve in our fire departments—those who put their lives on the line to protect our neighborhoods, our businesses, and our families. This amendment reflects our recognition of their dedication and our commitment to ensuring that they are
supported with clear structure, sustainable funding, and strong inter-agency cooperation.
While the path to this agreement has not been without its challenges, today we are united in purpose. Our cities have come together with a shared vision: to work collaboratively toward a long-term fire service solution that prioritizes the safety of
our communities.
The First Amendment outlines interim operations and shared responsibilities as we continue developing a new long-term model for fire service delivery with a consolidated department, bringing together the best of both. The recently adopted Joint Operations Procedures, attached to the First Amendment, provide a
framework for aligning staffing, response coverage, training, and station access in the months ahead — all designed to improve service while we build something new.
This agreement is not the final answer — it’s a step forward. We remain committed to working closely together to design and implement a modern, sustainable fire protection model that meets the future needs of our communities. To do so we will look for the leadership of both fire departments as well as feedback from our
community. Please join us on May 8 at 7pm at Trinity Lutheran Church for our Joint Fire Forum to hear more on our plans for the new department.
While planning our next steps, our focus remains on collaborative planning, transparency, and doing right by the firefighters on the front lines as we stand united in service to the people of Orono, Long Lake, and Medina.
Signed,
Bob Tunheim, Mayor of Orono
Charlie Miner, Mayor of Long Lake
