About the event

Who Advocates for the Advocate? A reflective-care course for SEND activists
A reflective workshop created for grassroots and community-led organisations that work directly with Black families and SEND communities.

About this Event

About the Workshop

If your organisation supports Black families or children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), you are likely navigating complex systems, limited resources, and emotional labour — all while showing up as a lifeline for others. But in the midst of this essential work, who is caring for you?

"Who Advocates for the Advocate?" is a workshop created for grassroots and community-led organisations that work directly with Black families and SEND communities. We're offering it online for the first time!

We'll provide you with a reflective, supportive space to think deeply about your internal wellbeing — both as individuals and as organisations — and how the demands of activism, advocacy, and service delivery affect your capacity to thrive.

This workshop has been co-designed with community practitioners, social care professionals, SEND specialists, and activists, ensuring it speaks to the realities you face and the values you hold.

What the Workshop Covers

During this session, you will be invited to explore:

  • How your organisation holds space for others — and what it takes to do that sustainably
  • The emotional and embodied impact of advocacy, care work, and navigating injustice
  • Where stress and burnout show up in your work and team culture
  • What it means to build internal structures for resilience and containment
  • How you might reimagine your support systems — from supervision and peer support to organisational boundaries and reflective practice

This is not a training session or strategy meeting. It is a space for pause — a chance to reflect, reconnect, and consider what your organisation needs in order to remain healthy, principled, and enduring.

Who This Is For

This workshop is for you if:

  • You are part of a grassroots or community organisation working with Black families and/or SEND communities
  • You hold leadership, frontline, advocacy, or peer support responsibilities
  • You are seeking space to reflect on how your work affects your own wellbeing
  • You want to explore ways to strengthen your organisation’s internal resilience and support systems

We particularly welcome participation from organisations that are Black-led, parent-led, or based in lived experience.
