Over the course of the 21st century, China has become one of the most important countries on the world stage. As Trump follows Biden's lead in escalating economic tensions with China and threatening a full-blown trade war, questions about China's current and future role in the world are becoming increasingly urgent.
On Saturday, 4 October, join Verso for a discussion on China's evolving position on the world stage between Wang Hui, Pun Ngai, and Rebecca Karl, chaired by Tariq Ali.
The event will take place at the SOAS Gallery Lecture Theatre.

Wang Hui is the Distinguished Professor and Director at Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences and author of numerous books including The Rise of Modern Chinese Thought, The Politics of Imagining Asia, , and .
Pun Ngai is Chair Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong. She obtained her PhD from SOAS, University of London. She was honored as the winner of the C. Wright Mills Award for her first book Made in China: Women Factory Workers in a Global Workplace (2005), which has been translated into French and Chinese. Her co-authored book, Dying for iPhone: Foxconn and the Lives of Chinese Workers (2020) has also been translated into German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Chinese. She is the sole author of Migrant Labor in China: Post Socialist Transformation (2016, Polity Press), and the editor of seven book volumes in Chinese and English.
Rebecca Karl teaches History at New York University. She is author of the Verso book, (2020).
Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. In addition to his fiction, he has written forty-five books on world history and politics, the most recent of which include biographies of Lenin and Churchill. His latest book is part two of his memoirs: You Can’t Please All: Memoirs Speakers 13 1980-2024. He is a longtime member of the New Left Review’s Editorial Committee and is currently the Chair of Verso’s Board of Directors.
